Who We Are


The Skate Group has raised funds in excess of £500,000 since it was formed 10 years ago (3rd Sept 2003).

The Hub Management Committee are a bunch of adult and young people who volunteer their time and have a vision for a creative community centre promoting enterprise and engagement.

The SWSG is a member of:

  • The Rural Community Council of Essex (RCCE)
  • The Council for Voluntary Service Uttlesford (CVSU)

Representatives of SWSG sit on the Essex County Council Youth Strategy Group, Saffron Walden Youth Outreach Project and the Uttlesford Youth Initiative Working Group and the Saffron Walden Neighbourhood Action Panel (NAP).

Representatives from other Societies:

The Saffron Walden Skate Group & The Hub Management Committee Trustees

Ian Herd

Chairman of the Trustees & The Hub Management Committee.


As one of the pioneers in the party industry Ian has run his own businesses in retail wholesale and distribution and developed techniques that he has taught to students all over the world, as Head of Education and Sales Development he has organised and managed events and conventions Europe wide. Now in the horticultural industry Ian is a qualified garden designer, has previously run his own design and landscape company and now is a Head Gardener on a large private estate.

The Treasurer

Treasurer to the Trustees & The Hub Management Committee.


The Group’s Treasurer has 20 years experience in the financial sector.

Jane Gray

Secretary to the Trustees & The Hub Management Committee.


Jane is a qualified Person Centred Counsellor, specialising in working with young people, as well as a qualified Community Mediator. She brings good knowledge and experience of project management and has extensive contacts and network built up over the past ten years working with the original skatepark build and management.

Gill Haigh

Policy & Funding Secretary to the Trustees & The Hub Management Committee.


Gill has a background in farming and horticulture and ran her own farm shop and animal feed business near Great Dunmow for over 20 years. She then moved to Kent and worked for a Community Foundation for 10 years. She brings to SWSG a wide experience of supporting community groups in all stages of funding applications. Her knowledge of charity management is extensive. Gill is responsible for DRB checks, policies,advising on fundraising and updating the website.

Chris Sleep

Trustee & member of The Hub Management Committee.


Chris is a commercial lawyer based in the Cambridge office of one of the region’s largest and most prestigious law firms, with experience of working for clients ranging from start-ups, SMEs through to some of the world’s largest multinational corporations.

Beverley Young

Trustee & member of The Hub Management Committee.


Beverley has worked for the last 12 yrs in support roles, both within Education and for ECC Children’s Services (Post adoption). She has a degree in Learning Support and a Certificate in Person Centred Art Therapy. In her spare time she is a Mosaic artist and has strong interest in all areas of creativity and of working with young people be it in a support role or through creative practice. Beverley is also the SWSG Child Protection Officer.

Rebecca Ilett

Trustee & member of The Hub Management Committee.


Rebecca has been a school governor at Ashdon Primary School for the past 8 years, having previously been on the P.T.A. She has been volunteering in schools for the past 20 years working with children on various art projects and has a track record of involvement in the community. Rebecca has an interest in community work as a parent and currently works in adult education. She has previously worked with young offenders.

Chris Cook

Trustee & member of The Hub Management Committee.


Chris is the Merchandising Advisor and Events Organiser for the Skate Group and for the Hub Management Committee. He is 22 years old and an accomplished BMX bike rider. Chris owns Midnight BMX and skate shop in Saffron Walden. He has been a member of the Skate Group, who run and maintain the skatepark, since the skatepark opened in 2007. His expertise is in branding and advertising through t-shirts and Skate Jams. “I’m always eager to take on more and be involved.”

Glen Crickmore

Member of the Hub Management Committee.


Glen is a Senior Youth Worker with Essex County Council and working through the community capacity building model, is supporting the Skate Group to develop their work with young people in Saffron Walden and the Uttlesford District.

Victoria Nash

Member of the Hub Management Committee.


Vicky has a background in administration in a variety of sectors. She also has experience of events management and PR. She believes that a centre for the community is needed, especially for the younger generation, which is why she joined the Hub Management Committee.

Sarah Ellis

Member of the Hub Management Committee.


Sarah has been working for 25 years as a provider of theatre as a tool for empowerment and social change. Her present company, HyperFusion Theatre Company, is highly regarded the field of theatre-in-education as one of the main providers of forum theatre in England. She is not only the founder but also the Artistic Director and is the leader behind all projects undertaken.
